Spotify’s Stock Up 5.5% on Fresh $1.5B Stock Buyback Program

Billboard · 3 hours ago

Spotify's share price jumped nearly 5.5% on Friday 21 August after the company disclosed that its board had approved a further $1.5 billion (£1.18 billion) in stock buybacks. Combined with $723 million (£569 million) still available from an earlier repurchase plan, the streaming giant's total buyback firepower now stands at roughly $2.223 billion (£1.75 billion). Buybacks reduce the number of shares in circulation, typically boosting the value of remaining shares and rewarding loyal investors, and the move comes as Spotify seeks to reassure markets amid a bumpier period for its stock.

Spotify's shares had surged 30-40% last summer, peaking at an all-time closing high of $775.90 (£611) on 26 June 2025 on strong user growth and improving margins, but have since dropped over 30% to $533.13 (£420) as of Thursday's close, as investors took profits and the growth outlook grew murkier. In its latest quarterly results, the firm reported subscriber growth and gross margin gains ahead of forecasts, though it warned that spending on marketing, AI and cloud infrastructure, alongside flat monthly active user growth, would pressure profits ahead. The company stressed the board's authorisation does not commit it to buying back any set amount of shares and that the programme could be paused at any time. As of 11am Friday, Spotify's market capitalisation stood at $110.77 billion (£87.2 billion), with about 205.7 million shares outstanding.
