St Helens playmaker Jonny Lomax has announced he will retire at the end of the current Super League season, bringing an end to a 20-year career with his hometown club. The 35-year-old has not played since fracturing his jaw in a defeat by Warrington Wolves in June, and injuries have limited him to just 10 appearances this season. His retirement marks the departure of one of Saints' most decorated modern players, whose career included leadership on the field and representative honours for England and Great Britain.

Lomax made his Saints debut in March 2009 aged 18 and went on to make 388 appearances, winning five Grand Finals, one Challenge Cup and a World Club Challenge. He also earned four caps for Great Britain and 11 for England, including a World Cup final appearance against Australia in 2017, and endured 19 operations, including 12 on his knee by the age of 26. St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus praised him as "the bravest of brave in the bravest of sports", while the club currently sit seventh in Super League, two points behind champions Hull KR, as they battle to secure a play-off spot in his final campaign.
