Star Trek: The Original Series receives new boxset for 60th anniversary

Polygon · 2 months ago

Star Trek: The Original Series is being reissued in a 60th anniversary box set, due for release on 8 September, offering all 79 episodes remastered in 1080p with enhanced visuals, original audio and more than nine hours of special features. The release matters as a marker of the franchise's milestone, but it has met a mixed reception from fans, who have given it a 2.7 rating on Amazon amid complaints that it includes less than a comparable earlier set.

The set comes in three versions: a DVD edition at $101.99, a base Blu-ray at $104.99, and an Amazon Exclusive Edition at $139.99 that adds a 4-inch vinyl of the original theme, limited-edition lobby cards and new packaging. Critics point to the 50th anniversary collection from a decade ago, which bundled the show, the first six films and The Animated Series for $208.99, and to the decision to issue another 1080p release rather than a 4K upscale. The grievances land amid a difficult period for the franchise, with airing shows reduced to Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy — both ending soon — the poorly reviewed Section 31 film, and no fully announced future projects under Paramount's new management.
