A group of on-set visual effects workers on Star Wars productions have voted to unionise with IATSE, the Hollywood crew union announced on Tuesday. The workers, involved in titles including The Mandalorian and Grogu, the upcoming season of Ahsoka and the forthcoming film Starfighter, showed "overwhelming" support for joining, marking a significant expansion of IATSE's ongoing campaign to organise the visual effects industry into one of Disney's flagship franchises.

IATSE did not disclose the number of workers involved, their specific roles, or where they are based, though it appears Lucasfilm voluntarily recognised the union. The next step is negotiating a first contract; Lucasfilm did not respond to a request for comment. The move builds on IATSE's organising drive that began with wins at Marvel and Disney in 2023 and extended to Avatar workers in 2024, and follows a pattern of targeting crew employed directly by productions—such as data wranglers and production supervisors—rather than staff at effects vendors like Weta FX or Industrial Light & Magic.
