Stardew Valley enters the third dimension thanks to this in-development mod that even comes with VR functionality

Rock Paper Shotgun · 2 hours ago

A modder known as kittycatcasey is developing a mod that renders the 2D farming simulator Stardew Valley in 3D, complete with virtual reality support. Titled The Third Dimension, the mod is notable because it transforms the visual presentation of a game never designed to work in three dimensions, while retaining its core activities such as walking around the home, talking to a spouse, watching the weather report and harvesting crops.

The mod currently works by mapping the game's existing 2D assets onto a 3D plane, which leaves some visual quirks such as missing wall sections and largely "billboarded" flat sprites. The creator describes it as a "decent proof of concept" and plans to give everything a unique 3D model over time. The VR functionality lets players hold individual tools, for example swinging an axe to chop down trees, and kittycatcasey has confirmed that no AI was used in making the project.

  • A modder is turning Stardew Valley into a 3D game.
  • The mod, called The Third Dimension, also supports VR.
  • It is an early proof of concept made without AI.
