Stokes shines as Durham get on top at Derby
Ben Stokes marked his first red-ball appearance since retiring from international cricket in June with a stellar all-round display as Durham took control of their County Championship Division Two match against Derbyshire at Derby. The former England captain scored 53 and struck with the first ball of his opening over, though he briefly left the field with a lower-side issue before returning before the close, adding to the significance of his comeback performance.
Durham were bowled out for 283, with half-centuries from Alex Lees, Graham Clark and Stokes offsetting a five-wicket haul from Derbyshire's Ben Aitchison, who became the first Derbyshire bowler in 61 years to take five wickets in an innings in four consecutive first-class matches. In reply, Derbyshire slumped to 127-6, trailing by 156 runs, as Matthew Potts, Will Rhodes and Stokes (2-14) shared the wickets, leaving Durham firmly on top after day two.
