A court has heard that a "stray" bullet fired by a police marksman's Glock pistol struck two worshippers during the terror attack at Heaton Park Synagogue, killing one and wounding the other. Attacker Jihad Al-Shamie, an Islamic State supporter wearing a fake suicide belt, had already fatally stabbed one congregant before firearms officers shot him dead seven minutes into the attack; the revelation that police gunfire also killed a victim adds a significant new dimension to the case ahead of next year's inquests.

At a pre-inquest hearing, counsel Ed Pleeth said officer "F42" fired four shots from his Glock, with a firearms expert concluding the first or second round missed Al-Shamie and struck both Adrian Daulby, 53, who died, and Yoni Finlay, 39, who survived after being hit in the chest while helping barricade the synagogue doors. Melvin Cravitz, 66, had already been stabbed to death by Al-Shamie, who was later shot dead by three officers firing a total of ten rounds; the IOPC has found no misconduct, but lawyers for the victims' families are pushing for the inquest to examine police planning, ambulance response times, and the wider handling of intelligence and radicalisation warnings.
