Streaming Ratings: ‘Masters of the Universe’ Powers to No. 1 Debut
Amazon MGM's "Masters of the Universe" topped Nielsen's US streaming rankings for 20-26 July, its first week available on Prime Video, offering a stronger performance than its lukewarm cinema run had suggested. The He-Man adaptation, starring Nicholas Galitzine, launched on the platform on 22 July having grossed just under $114 million worldwide against a $170 million budget, making its streaming success notable given the disappointing box office return.
The film logged 1.17 billion minutes of viewing in the week, one of only two titles to pass the billion-minute mark alongside HBO Max's "The Big Bang Theory," which hit a second consecutive all-time high with 1.12 billion minutes. Among original titles, Netflix's "The Hawk" (944 million minutes) and Prime Video's "Ride or Die" (922 million) led the pack, while "King of the Hill" and "Ransom Canyon" both returned to the charts on the back of new season premieres, and Netflix's "72 Hours" debuted strongly in second place among films. Nielsen's figures cover only US television-set viewing and exclude computers and mobile devices.
- "Masters of the Universe" debuted at No. 1 on Nielsen's streaming charts.
- Film underperformed at cinemas but topped streaming with 1.17bn minutes watched.
- "The Big Bang Theory" hit a new viewing high on HBO Max.
