Studio Ghibli Officially Rejects Hollywood’s Sequel Obsession

Collider · 3 hours ago

Studio Ghibli has effectively closed the door on producing a sequel to its beloved 1988 classic My Neighbor Totoro, resisting the sequel-driven approach common in Hollywood. Despite years of fan enthusiasm for a follow-up, the studio has yet to revisit the story, and no new film of any kind has been announced since Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron. The decision underlines Ghibli's longstanding preference for original, standalone storytelling over franchise expansion, even for its most iconic and commercially adored property.

My Neighbor Totoro, directed by Miyazaki and set in 1950s Japan, follows sisters Satsuki and Mei as they move with their father to a new home near the hospital where their mother is being treated, and befriend the gentle forest spirit Totoro. Since its release, the film has become the defining image of Studio Ghibli, holding a 94% critics' score and 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Founded in 1985, the studio has produced more than 20 feature films, but Totoro remains without a sequel despite being its most recognisable and celebrated work.
