Studio TF1 Smashes Doc Records With ‘Leon Marchand: Beyond Gold,’ Rolls Out ‘Surface’
Studio TF1 has reported strong results at home and abroad for two recent titles: the documentary series "Leon Marchand: Beyond Gold" and the mystery drama "Surface". The three-part documentary, which follows French Olympic swimming champion Leon Marchand in the year after his four gold medals at the Paris Olympics, has set an all-time viewing record for France TV, underlining the continued commercial appeal of Marchand's story beyond the pool. Meanwhile, "Surface", a police mystery based on Olivier Norek's bestselling novel, has continued to attract international broadcasters and streamers a year after its debut, reflecting the export strength of French scripted drama.
"Beyond Gold" drew 2.3 million average views per episode on france.tv following its July premiere, then 1.6 million viewers when it aired on France 2 on 1 September, alongside more than 13 million social media views, including over a million on YouTube. "Surface", produced by Quad Drama and first shown at Canneseries, has since sold to the BBC in the UK, MHz Choice in the US, AMC Global Media in Spain, Vodafone in Greece, Blue Play in Switzerland and airline/cruise distributor Moment. The six-episode series centres on Parisian police captain Noémie Chastain, who reopens a 20-year-old missing person case in a remote town while recovering from a facial injury, uncovering secrets that affect both her and the community.
