A 22-year-old Sudanese migrant has died in Calais after failing to leap onto the roof of a moving Britain-bound lorry from a road toll booth, French prosecutors have confirmed. The incident, which occurred at around 2.40am on Sunday at the Setques toll plaza in Pas-de-Calais, underscores the continued dangers migrants face as they attempt to reach the UK, whether by hiding in lorries or crossing the Channel in small boats.

CCTV footage showed the man attempting the jump before falling onto the road behind the vehicle; another migrant had successfully boarded the same lorry moments earlier. He was taken in a critical condition to the University Hospital of Lille, where he died that afternoon, and an investigation concluded the death was most likely an accident before the case was closed. Since January, at least 16 people have died at sea off the French coast and three others on land attempting the crossing, even as small-boat numbers have fallen to their lowest summer level since 2020, with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood crediting increased international cooperation and a £662 million deal with France.
