## Key points

- Sullivan said he would accept the Alaska Senate result even if he lost.
- A second candidate named Dan Sullivan has fuelled allegations of voter confusion.
- A judge dismissed a federal bid to delay certification in the event of a narrow Republican defeat.

## Summary

Republican senator Dan Sullivan said he would accept the result of Alaska’s Senate election even if he lost to Democrat Mary Peltola. Asked on CNN’s State of the Union on 1 November whether he would accept the result only if he won, Sullivan replied: “No, I’m going to accept the election results.” His assurance came amid a dispute over another candidate on the ballot, retired teacher Dan J. Sullivan, who shares the incumbent’s name. The senator argued that the second candidacy could confuse voters and cost him votes.

The Trump administration had sued to delay certification if Sullivan lost by a margin smaller than the votes received by the other Dan Sullivan. A federal judge dismissed that request on 1 November. Reporting about efforts to recruit the second candidate has prompted investigations and accusations from Sullivan against Peltola; she has denied knowing about such an effort. The closely watched contest could help determine control of the Senate. Sullivan’s pledge to accept the result stood alongside his continuing objections to how the race had been conducted.
