Sundance Institute director Eugene Hernandez has published a detailed letter setting out plans for the festival's 2027 move to Boulder, Colorado, its first edition away from Park City, Utah, after decades there. The announcement matters because it marks the most concrete confirmation yet of how the festival will function in its new home, addressing venues, logistics and scheduling less than six months before the event begins, and signalling Sundance's intent to preserve its identity while adapting to an entirely new city.

The 2027 festival will run from 21 to 31 January, with public online screenings from 28 to 31 January and industry/press access a day earlier. A key feature is that all venues will sit within a two-mile radius, making the event more walkable than the sprawling Park City setup; sites include Macky Auditorium (the largest, seating just over 2,000), Boulder Public Library, the Hotel Boulderado as festival headquarters, Boulder Theater, Chautauqua Auditorium and the Dairy Arts Center, among others. Hernandez described the venue upgrades as "unprecedented," while the letter also confirms an expanded schedule and the revival of the New Frontier programme, which showcases technology-focused work.
