Suno unveils copyright-compliant music AI models with major record label backing
Developing story first seen 51 minutes ago
Suno has globally launched its v6 suite of AI music generation models, developed in partnership with Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe, the three rightsholders whose licensing deals it has secured over recent months. The company's previous models are being retired the same day, and Suno says v6 was trained "entirely from scratch" using licensed data, user preference signals and internal research, rather than reusing the datasets behind earlier models. The launch marks a significant step in Suno's attempt to move from contentious copyright disputes towards formal industry partnerships, though the picture remains mixed given the mounting legal challenges it still faces elsewhere.
Notably, Suno's Chief Product Officer Jack Brody confirmed v6's training data excludes material from Universal Music Group and Sony Music, which remain plaintiffs in a US copyright case filed in Boston in June 2024; the labels recently amended their complaint to allege Suno circumvented YouTube's anti-downloading protections, a claim Suno has partly admitted while disputing the labels' standing. Suno also faces separate lawsuits or claims from Germany's GEMA (which it lost in July), Denmark's Koda, Canada's SOCAN, publisher Round Hill Music (seeking up to $1 billion), and a proposed class action from musician Jason Isbell and others over alleged unauthorised use of artists' names and likenesses.
