Norway's men's football team will face England in a World Cup quarter-final in Miami on Saturday, where scientists warn that extreme heat, humidity and blazing sunshine could pose a genuine danger to players. The conditions — intensified by a plume of dust blown across the Atlantic from the Sahara desert — will subject the northern European sides to a level of heat stress rarely encountered in their home countries, potentially slowing the match and risking heat-related illness.

The match is forecast to be played at a WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) of around 88°F (31°C), above the 82°F threshold at which the American College of Sports Medicine advises halting activity, though below FIFA's 90°F trigger for mandatory cooling breaks. Loughborough University researcher Matt Maley cautioned that players' motivation to maintain their usual sprint output could push them into heat exhaustion, while a coalition of scientists across five continents warned FIFA in May that its guidelines are inadequate, urging longer hydration breaks and postponement of matches above 82°F. Separately, the New Weather Institute warned that spectators — especially older fans and those with health conditions — face risks of dehydration and heat stroke, describing the tournament's heat as a potential "public health emergency".

  • Miami heat and Saharan dust threaten England v Norway quarter-final
  • Forecast 88u00b0F WBGT exceeds safe-exercise limits for athletes
  • Scientists say FIFA's heat guidelines are inadequate for players and fans
