England began a new era for their women's one-day international side with a commanding six-wicket victory over Ireland in the first ODI at Leicester, chasing down 282 to record their highest successful chase in women's ODI history. The win came in a transitional line-up missing retired stars Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont, as well as injured captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, and gives head coach Charlotte Edwards encouraging signs as she rebuilds the top order ahead of next summer's Ashes.

Opener Maia Bouchier struck a magnificent 104 off 95 balls, sharing a 143-run opening stand with Sophia Dunkley (73) to set up the chase, before Alice Capsey (41 not out) and Freya Kemp finished the job with 11.5 overs to spare. Ireland had earlier posted a competitive 281-5, built on half-centuries from captain Gaby Lewis, Amy Hunter and Rebecca Stokell, but their bowling and fielding faltered against England's power in the second innings. England now lead the three-match series 1-0, with the next game at Derby on Thursday.
