Supergirl Lands Official Streaming Date on HBO Max

Polygon · 3 hours ago

Warner Bros. and DC Studios have confirmed that "Supergirl," this year's theatrical entry in James Gunn's DC Universe, will begin streaming on HBO Max from 10 September. The film, which struggled at the box office, gives audiences at home the chance to watch it without a cinema visit, though it comes with a shaky critical and commercial track record behind it.

Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the film follows a True Grit-inspired revenge story in which Kara teams up with a young girl named Ruthey to hunt the villain Krem of the Yellow Hill, who poisoned Krypto and killed Ruthey's father. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, it draws on Tom King's comic "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow." Despite a promising lead performance, the film earned just $126 million worldwide and opened with a weak $38 million, and Polygon's review criticised its lack of the boldness seen in Gunn's "Superman." Alcock is nonetheless set to reprise the role in "Superman: Man of Tomorrow," due July 2027.
