‘Supporting Role’ Director Ana Urushadze Preps ‘Fear of Butterflies,’ a Detective Story With ‘Mysticism and a Touch of Body Horror’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Georgian director Ana Urushadze, whose "Supporting Role" is showing in competition at this week's Sarajevo Film Festival, has revealed details of her third feature, "Fear of Butterflies." The project marks a fresh step for the acclaimed filmmaker, who first drew international attention with her Locarno-winning debut "Scary Mother" and has since built a reputation for distinctive, offbeat storytelling within Georgia's celebrated national cinema.

The new film follows a woman approaching 30 who undergoes strange mental and physical changes after struggling to accept her own body, a story Urushadze describes as "a detective story with a little bit of mysticism and a touch of body horror." Its title stems from the director's own lifelong phobia of butterflies, which she explored with a psychologist friend while making the film. Estonian producer Ivo Felt's Allfilm, a co-producer on "Supporting Role," will again work with Urushadze, though she says she is seeking financing abroad and is unsure whether the film can be made in Georgia, given an ongoing industry boycott of the state-backed Georgian National Film Center.
