The man suspected of carrying out Saturday's deadly attack on Berlin's Pride celebrations has been shot dead by police following a nearly 24-hour manhunt. Abdul Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, was tracked down in a garden in the Berlin suburb of Spandau on Sunday evening after allegedly driving a van into the crowd and then attacking people with a machete, in what officials believe was an Islamic extremist terror attack near the city's Pride festival close to the Brandenburg Gate.

Police said Ballout ran towards officers wielding a sharp instrument when confronted, prompting them to open fire; he died at the scene. The attack killed one person and injured 29 others. Prosecutors said Ballout had previously travelled to Lebanon in 2025 intending to join Islamic State in Syria, was arrested there and briefly imprisoned, then convicted by a Berlin juvenile court in May of preparing a serious act of violence and spreading IS propaganda online, receiving a suspended sentence he was appealing at the time of the attack. Mourners have since gathered near the scene to leave flowers in tribute to victims and in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
