Sussex seamer Henry Crocombe took his second hat-trick in eight days, sparking a dramatic collapse that reduced Essex from 171-3 to 177 all out in just 26 balls on day two of their County Championship Division One match at Chelmsford. The 24-year-old, who joins Surrey at the end of the season, finished with figures of 5-39, taking five wickets in just 14 deliveries without conceding a run, leaving Essex's promotion hopes in jeopardy and reviving relegation fears.

Sussex had posted 275 in the morning, boosted by Ari Karvelas's rapid 38, before Crocombe and fellow bowlers James Coles and Zaman Akhter ran through the Essex order after Charlie Allison's departure for 56 triggered the slide. Six Essex batters lost their stumps in the innings, with Simon Harmer and Akhter both trapped lbw off consecutive Crocombe deliveries and Jamie Porter dismissed for Crocombe's fifth wicket.
