## Key points

- Sweden makes extensive use of factory-built housing.
- Prefabricated components can allow much faster assembly.
- The article asks why the US has not adopted the approach at similar scale.

## Summary

Sweden builds many homes from factory-made components, where finished rooms or structural sections are transported to a site and assembled into buildings. This approach can speed construction while producing high-quality housing, and raises the question of why it remains less common in the United States.

The article says about 90 per cent of Sweden’s new single-family homes use prefabricated timber systems. Of new multi-family apartments, 43 per cent have fully prefabricated structural frames and 46 per cent are partly prefabricated; one 114-apartment development was assembled on site in about five weeks.
