SWFC: Vital context and a big need – The view from up-close as Owls complete Eurotrip – thestar.co.uk
Sheffield Wednesday ended their European pre-season camp with a 6–0 defeat by Stoke City, although the report argues that the scoreline needs to be viewed in context. The match exposed the squad’s lack of depth and reinforced the need for further recruitment before the League One campaign, particularly in attack.
Wednesday’s more experienced side were competitive for roughly 70 minutes, showing organised pressing, quick transitions and promising play on the left involving Max Lowe, Louie Barry and Barry Bannan. The heavy defeat followed extensive substitutions, leaving a young defensive unit exposed; the article says the club need a reliable goalscorer, more right-sided attacking options and greater depth, while limited transfer funds make recruitment difficult.
- Wednesday’s 6–0 loss was heavily affected by late substitutions.
- Early performance offered signs of progress.
- Further attacking recruitment remains a priority.
