Sydney Marathon medal mistakenly depicts Munich stadium

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Organisers of the Sydney Marathon are facing questions after eagle-eyed participants noticed that the official 2026 medal appears to depict Munich's Allianz Arena rather than Sydney's own Allianz Stadium, which the race route actually passes. The design was unveiled by organisers as a tribute to landmarks along the course, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, but the stadium etching more closely resembles the German venue's distinctive inflatable-cushion exterior than the flatter, bronze-finned façade of its Sydney namesake. The mix-up is potentially embarrassing given the race's status as one of the World Marathon Majors and comes just a week before the event takes place.

Around 40,000 runners are due to take part in the 42.2km marathon on 30 August, after more than 120,000 people entered the ballot. The medal's reverse side, featuring a gold and indigo design by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, is unaffected, and Killian has confirmed he was not responsible for the disputed skyline artwork. The BBC has approached Sydney Marathon for comment. A similar error occurred at last year's Great North Run, where medals mistakenly showed the Sunderland and the River Wear instead of Newcastle landmarks; Sydney became the seventh Abbott World Marathon Majors city in 2024, with Cape Town set to become the eighth next year.

  • Sydney Marathon medal appears to show Munich's stadium, not Sydney's
  • Error spotted a week before 30 August race with 40,000 runners
  • Echoes similar landmark mix-up at 2025 Great North Run medals
