## Key points

- Sydney Sweeney leads Netflix’s live-action Gundam film.
- The series pairs giant robot battles with themes of war.
- Its success could launch a new franchise for Netflix.

## Summary

Netflix is developing a live-action Mobile Suit Gundam film starring Sydney Sweeney, with Noah Centineo, Jason Isaacs and Michael Mando also in the cast. The project could appeal to Transformers fans through its giant robot battles, while Gundam’s focus on war and its consequences could give it greater thematic depth.

Jim Mickle, who adapted Sweet Tooth for Netflix, is writing and directing. Earlier filmmakers Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Brian K. Vaughan left the project; the article argues that Mickle could still bring its themes to the screen. Gundam’s creator, Yoshiyuki Tomino, drew on his experiences growing up during the Second World War, and the franchise explores how weapons shape human conflict.
