Take-Two subpoenas Discord and Microsoft in hunt for GTA VI leaker

Engadget · 2 hours ago

Take-Two Interactive has filed subpoenas targeting Microsoft and Discord as it seeks to identify whoever leaked footage of Grand Theft Auto VI, according to Kotaku. The move comes just days after new footage began circulating online, threatening to overshadow the company's own promotional plans and underscoring how seriously the publisher is treating the security breach ahead of the game's high-profile release.

The petitions, filed in the Southern District of New York, ask Microsoft to hand over records from its internal investigation into a persona known as "cyberleek" linked to a GitHub repository allegedly hosting copyrighted GTA VI material. Discord has been asked to provide identifying details—including names, phone numbers and linked accounts—for several users and servers, among them "CYBERLEEK," "CINEMATICROCKSTAR," "Surfer24k," a server run by content creator DarkViperAU, and one called "!Odyssey." The leaks began on 18 August, prompting rapid takedown efforts, and appeared to show a working build of the game, complicating Take-Two's planned Netflix "extended look" scheduled for 27 August ahead of the title's November launch. This is not the first GTA VI leak; a similar breach in 2022 led to a hospital order for the teenage hacker responsible.
