## Key points

- James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton in Texas’s Senate race.
- Democrats won their first Texas statewide election since 1994.
- Talarico will become the state’s first Democratic senator since 1988.

## Summary

Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in Texas’s US Senate race, flipping a seat in a state Republicans have dominated for decades. The result ends a long Democratic drought in statewide Texas elections and gives the party a significant gain as it seeks control of the Senate.

Talarico is the first Democrat elected to represent Texas in the Senate since Lloyd Bentsen in 1988, and the first Democrat to win any Texas statewide election since 1994. President Trump carried Texas by nearly 14 percentage points in 2024. The costly contest followed Paxton’s victory over incumbent John Cornyn in the Republican primary; Talarico campaigned on affordability and public education, while Paxton focused on immigration and conservative policies.
