Talent shows put disabled performers in spotlight
Sheffield's Burton Street Foundation, a social enterprise supporting over 250 individuals with learning and physical disabilities, recently staged three annual performance events: Burton's Got Talent (now in its 15th year), Burtonbury Festival, and the Burton Street Drag Show. These showcases offered participants opportunities to perform live music, display artwork, and celebrate creative expression through costume and drag performance.
Performers reported positive experiences, with one participant noting the joy of singing to an audience in full costume, whilst another praised the collaborative spirit and entertainment value of the events. The foundation's manager stated that these performances demonstrate how individuals with learning disabilities can develop creativity and confidence when given appropriate support and opportunity, emphasising that such events exemplify the organisation's core mission of celebrating and empowering the people it serves.
