The United States men's national soccer team suffered a decisive 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the World Cup Round of 16 match held in Seattle, despite entering the contest with heightened expectations. The roster featured a strong cohort of players in their prime, including Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Folarin Balogun, whose suspension had been controversially lifted before the fixture. Belgium, viewed as a beatable opponent, displayed superior execution and tactical discipline throughout the match.
Following the loss, sports commentator Taylor Twellman directed sharp criticism at the US squad, emphasizing that the defeat stemmed from failures in basic fundamentals rather than being outmatched strategically. The match garnered record television viewership, becoming the highest-rated soccer broadcast in American history, amplifying the visibility of what many observers characterised as a disappointing performance by a team expected to advance further in the tournament.
