The 23rd Commonwealth Games begin in Glasgow this week, with Team Wales fielding 114 athletes across ten sports in the hope of adding to their medal tally. The Games, scaled back after Victoria in Australia withdrew as host, open officially with Thursday's ceremony at the Hydro Arena, with competition starting on Friday 24 July following an extra "day zero" of bowls added to cope with unprecedented demand. Wales will compete against 73 other countries and territories in disciplines including athletics, swimming, cycling, gymnastics, boxing, judo and netball, alongside para events.

Among Wales' strongest medal hopes are cyclist Emma Finucane, an Olympic gold medallist since her Birmingham 2022 bronzes, and swimmer Matt Richards, chasing the major medal that eluded him after four fourth-place finishes last time out. Gymnast Ruby Evans, para athlete and team captain Olivia Breen, and boxer Rosie Eccles, who will carry the flag at the opening ceremony in what she says is her final Games, are also tipped for success. Wales are also looking to the future, with 17-year-old swimmer Theodora Taylor and 20-year-old judoka Lola Hodson among the rising talents expected to make their mark in Glasgow.
