Teddy Swims has released a new single, "Break Up in Reverse," via Warner Records, in which he reflects on the end of a relationship without regret or resentment. The song matters as a personal marker for the singer, who has said it draws directly on his own recent break-up with the mother of his child and forms part of the writing for his forthcoming album.

The track was inspired by an old Nas song, "Rewind," which unfolds entirely in reverse; Swims applied the same conceit to his relationship, building to the line "Say goodbye to me in the beginning and love me in the end." The accompanying music video, directed by Lewis Cater, opens on Swims before a pile of rubble that a reversing bulldozer reassembles into a room of meaningful objects, including photos, baby toys and kintsugi pottery. The release follows his April single "Mr. Know It All," which he performed at the American Music Awards in May, and precedes his North American Ugly Tour, running from Kansas City on 22 September to Los Angeles on 18 November.
