A 15-year-old girl was killed in Manhattan’s East Village after a privately operated sanitation truck struck the Citi Bike she was riding with a 13-year-old friend. The collision occurred as the truck turned right at 14th Street and First Avenue on Friday evening, in an area known for its nightlife, prompting an extensive emergency response and police investigation.

The younger girl suffered serious injuries to her leg and pelvis and was taken to Bellevue Hospital, but was reportedly expected to survive. Witnesses said the older girl was trapped beneath the truck and received CPR, while several ambulances, police officers and firefighters attended; investigators were examining evidence and reviewing footage from nearby city cameras, with the driver remaining at the scene for questioning.
