Police seize KillSec servers in four-country raids, with three detained

The Register ·

Authorities have seized KillSec’s infrastructure in an international operation and made three provisional arrests. Police suspect a 16-year-old was the ransomware group’s main operator, but officials have not confirmed whether that person was arrested or publicly identified them.

Raids took place on 30 September at eight properties across Greece, Romania, Spain and the UK, involving ten police agencies. Investigators took control of five central servers and secured at least 110 TB of stolen data; the group is linked to around 1,000 suspected attacks worldwide and used data theft and encryption to pressure victims into paying.

Ransomware attacks are a type of crime where criminals hack into an organisation's computer systems, steal data, and lock the systems so the rightful owners cannot access them. The attackers then demand payment, threatening to release the stolen information or keep the systems locked unless a ransom is paid.

KillSec is a criminal group that has carried out thousands of ransomware attacks on organisations around the world. The scale and frequency of its operations have made it one of the most significant ransomware groups active in recent years.

These attacks have become a major global problem, costing businesses billions of pounds annually and sometimes affecting critical services such as hospitals and government agencies. Law enforcement agencies worldwide now prioritise tackling ransomware groups, recognising the serious damage they cause and the need for international cooperation to disrupt them.
