Teenage amateur boxer is sentenced after luring elderly man to a park on Grindr to bash him and steal $3,000

Daily Mail · 3 hours ago

A Brisbane teenager has been jailed after luring a 70-year-old man to a park via the dating app Grindr, then assaulting him and stealing $3,000 in a "honeytrap" scheme. Cooper Watt, 19, admitted robbing the victim alongside two younger accomplices, in an attack prosecutors linked to online "manosphere" content that encourages young men to target people they suspect of paedophilia; the case has drawn attention amid growing concern about vigilante-style violence inspired by such material.

The group posed as a 15-year-old boy, sending the victim a naked image before arranging to meet him at a park in Deception Bay in January 2025. They assaulted him, repeatedly calling him a "paedophile", and forced him to withdraw $3,000 from an ATM, leaving him with bruises and wounds. Watt, an amateur Muay Thai fighter, pleaded guilty to robbery in company with personal violence and was sentenced by Judge John Allen to two years' imprisonment with immediate parole, plus an order to repay the victim $3,000; prosecutors also described the attack as a hate crime targeting a gay man.
