A 13-year-old died and two other people were injured when part of a fountain collapsed in Ciudad Rodrigo, western Spain, during celebrations of the national team's World Cup victory. The tragedy occurred as hundreds of residents gathered to mark Spain's success, turning what should have been a joyful moment into one of mourning for the local community.

The incident happened shortly after midnight on Monday at the Arbol Gordo fountain in the centre of Ciudad Rodrigo, a walled medieval city of around 12,000 people in Salamanca province near the Portuguese border. The upper part of the monument broke loose and struck several people, according to regional emergency services. The town hall issued a statement offering condolences and expressing solidarity with the victim's family and friends.
