The Tesla Cybercab, launched in Austin, Texas without a steering wheel or pedals, has been found to contain a hidden virtual joystick interface that allows manual control of the vehicle. Riders discovered the feature by chance in at least two separate videos posted on X, showing a control panel appearing on the central display during customer journeys. The discovery is notable because Tesla has marketed the Cybercab specifically on the basis that it requires no manual controls at all, positioning it as a fully autonomous vehicle for the future.

The interface appears as a square screen in the lower left of the display, featuring a forward/reverse toggle, along with buttons to stop the vehicle, sound the horn and open the doors manually, plus live camera views. It is thought to be intended for Tesla employees or depot workers who need to reposition vehicles at low speed without contacting the remote control centre, and could conceivably assist police or emergency responders too. The absence of a steering wheel and pedals for passengers is the substantive claim Tesla has made, and a maintenance-level joystick accessible only to authorised personnel does not undermine that; its brief, unresponsive appearance on a customer screen looks like an interface bug to be patched, not evidence of deception.

The case against

Sceptics would counter that Tesla has built its Cybercab pitch squarely on the idea of a vehicle with no manual controls whatsoever, and discovering a working override system, however limited its intended use, complicates that narrative and invites questions about how autonomous the vehicle truly is. Given Tesla's history of ambitious claims about self-driving capability, critics would argue the company owes riders and regulators full transparency about what control systems exist, who can access them and under what safeguards, rather than letting the public stumble upon them by accident in social media videos. The fact that the panel appeared unexplained during a paying customer's journey, with no clarity yet on why access controls failed, is precisely the kind of opacity that erodes trust in a company asking the public to accept vehicles with no human means of intervention.
