## Key points

- HBO finales helped define several landmark series.
- *Veep* and *Girls* end in ways that echo their themes.
- The supplied article excerpt ends before the full ranking.

## Summary

The article ranks ten HBO series finales, arguing that they helped cement the network’s reputation for memorable television. It highlights how the endings reflected each show’s themes, from romantic fantasy in *Sex and the City* to political cynicism in *Veep* and the uneasy portrayal of friendship in *Girls*.

Among the examples, *Veep* ends with Selina Meyer remembered as an ineffective, one-term president, while *Girls* closes on Hannah and Marnie adjusting to life with Hannah’s newborn. *Barry* wraps up its main storylines and ends with Barry’s son watching a biopic that recasts him as a tragic hero. The supplied article text cuts off during its discussion of *The Wire*, so it does not include the full ranking or all ten entries.
