## Summary

The article ranks ten of the greatest portal fantasy anime, a genre in which characters travel through a portal to another world and can return. It distinguishes the genre from isekai, while noting that the two can overlap, and argues that portal stories offer a varied form of escapism.

The excerpt highlights *Restaurant to Another World*, where fantasy guests visit a Japanese restaurant for Saturday meals; *Blue Exorcist*, whose characters travel between the human realm and the underworld; *Flip Flappers*, which uses portals to explore different psyches and storytelling styles; and *Sword Art Online*, where players become trapped in a virtual game before later travelling between it and reality.
