## Summary

The article ranks ten frightening horror films adapted from books, arguing that strong source material can make for effective screen scares. Its selection spans ghosts, vampires, werewolves, demons and a giant fish, offering a range of unsettling stories for Halloween viewing.

Among the examples in the supplied text are *The Ritual*, adapted from Adam Nevill’s 2011 novel, about hikers stalked in a remote Swedish forest; *Malevolent*, based on Eva Konstantopoulos’s novella *Hush*, about a brother and sister whose ghost-hunting scam goes wrong; and *Dracula*, adapted from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel. The text also notes that the 1922 film *Nosferatu* drew on *Dracula* without permission, changing the characters’ names.
