John Bonham, Led Zeppelin’s drummer, nearly played on Black Sabbath’s 1972 track ‘Supernaut’ after becoming a strong admirer of its groove. The proposed collaboration never happened, but it highlights the close connections between two leading British hard-rock bands and Bonham’s respect for Sabbath’s music.
‘Supernaut’ appeared on Black Sabbath’s 1972 album Vol. 4. Drummer Bill Ward recalled that Bonham believed he could reproduce the song’s double-bass-drum part using one bass drum, while guitarist Tony Iommi said Bonham instead joined the band for an extended studio jam; Iommi said he would like to hear any recording if it still exists.
