Stevie Nicks has reflected on losing the song "Don't Come Around Here No More" to Tom Petty in 1985, revealing she was "furious" at the time but came to see it as fate. The track, co-written with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, was originally intended for Nicks but ended up being recorded by Petty and the Heartbreakers after she struggled to nail down a hook for it, illustrating the close creative ties—and occasional rivalry—between the two artists during her early solo career.

Nicks had modelled much of her solo sound on Petty's heartland rock style, even enlisting producer Jimmy Iovine, who worked with Petty, for her debut album, which was launched by the hit "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around". When Nicks couldn't complete "Don't Come Around Here No More", Petty took the song for his own album Southern Accents, with Nicks later contributing backing vocals to the recording. The song helped reinvigorate the Heartbreakers after a lacklustre previous record, though Nicks admitted she kicked herself for not finishing the chorus first.
