Francis Ford Coppola once compared his 1997 legal drama The Rainmaker to The Godfather, arguing that both films balanced serious subject matter with humour. The comparison highlights Coppola’s view that comedy can make dramatic stories more human and accessible, even in films centred on crime, injustice or moral conflict.

The Rainmaker, adapted from John Grisham’s novel, stars Matt Damon as a newly qualified lawyer taking on an insurance company accused of denying vital medical care. Coppola said the film had “a lot of humour”, despite its darker legal and ethical themes; The Godfather, released in 1972, similarly contains moments of warmth and wit amid its depiction of organised crime.
