## Key points

- Campy horror mixes scares with comedy and absurdity.
- The list spans cult classics from several decades.
- Some films use camp for satire; others embrace silliness.

## Summary

The article presents campy horror as a blend of frightening material and deliberate or accidental absurdity, exaggeration and comedy. It argues that this mix can make films memorable cult favourites, whether they knowingly parody horror conventions or pair genuine scares with theatrical excess.

Examples include *Sleepaway Camp*, whose dark turns and controversial ending contrast with its summer-camp setting, and *Leprechaun*, praised for its cheesy tone and silly villain. It also highlights *The Lost Boys* for its stylish vampire thrills, *Frankenhooker* for combining exploitation comedy with social satire, and *Plan 9 from Outer Space* for its entertaining ineptitude; the supplied article text ends as it begins discussing *Killer Klowns from Outer Space*.
