The 20-somethings betting big on tech stocks

BBC Technology · 17 hours ago

A growing number of young investors in their 20s and 30s across Asia and Australia are pouring savings into technology stocks, riding a rally fuelled largely by the artificial intelligence boom. While some, like Australian investor Michelle Huynh, have seen substantial gains, analysts warn the enthusiasm — amplified by social media and retail-focused marketing — may be outpacing the underlying profitability of the companies involved, raising concerns about a potential bubble.

Huynh, 26, saw her tech holdings rise by A$31,000 (£16,100) at their peak this year before easing back to around A$22,000 amid recent volatility. Markets have surged broadly, with the Nasdaq up roughly 10% and Japan's Nikkei 225 up more than 20%, but South Korea's Kospi index has been especially turbulent, climbing over 50% since January before dropping from a June peak above 9,000 points to around 6,500, triggering seven trading halts. Concerns over investors borrowing heavily to buy shares have prompted South Korean authorities to act, while analysts caution that many retail investors are betting on "optimistic outcomes" rather than solid business fundamentals.
