Kristen Wiig has described her 2005 Saturday Night Live audition as “the scariest five minutes of my life”, reflecting the pressure of performing a short solo routine of characters and impressions. The audition ultimately launched the comedian’s wider television career, helping establish her as one of SNL’s most celebrated modern cast members before later film success including Bridesmaids.

Wiig initially did not get the role, but was invited to join SNL’s 31st season four episodes in and made her debut on 12 November 2005, in an episode hosted by Jason Lee with Foo Fighters performing. Bill Hader and The Lonely Island also joined that year; Wiig became a full cast member in 2006, left in 2012 after seven years, and entered the show’s Five Timers Club as a host in 2024.
