## Key points

- A Pakistan-bound gas carrier was struck despite reported Iranian clearance.
- The crew was unharmed; responsibility for the attack remains unknown.
- The incident raises questions about how safe passage could be guaranteed.

## Summary

A Qatari liquefied natural gas carrier bound for Pakistan was struck near the Strait of Hormuz on 30 October, despite reported assurances of safe passage negotiated by Islamabad with Iran. The Al Mayeda was damaged, but its crew was unharmed, the vessel remained operational and no environmental harm was reported. Qatar condemned the attack and opened an investigation. The attacker has not been identified, so the incident cannot be attributed to Iran on the available evidence.

The strike came as Pakistan and Qatar continued efforts to mediate between Iran and the United States over shipping through the strait. Iranian officials said a proposal under discussion could reopen the waterway within two days if Tehran’s conditions were met. The Al Mayeda incident exposes a practical difficulty for those talks: obtaining clearance for a ship does not, by itself, ensure its safe passage. It also raises questions about how any wider agreement would be enforced while the conflict and restrictions on navigation continue.
