The Avalanches reunite with Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O for “achingly forlorn” single ‘Blue Shadows’: “Some people just have access to a higher plane”
The Avalanches have released ‘Blue Shadows’, a new collaboration with Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O, marking their second joint track after 2020’s ‘Dial D For Devotion’. The haunting, soulful single is significant as it continues the Australian electronic group’s recent run of collaborations and highlights Karen O’s distinctive vocal contribution.
Built around a sample from Blue Gas’s early-1980s song ‘Shadows From Nowhere’, the track was revived after nearly being lost in an old folder. Robbie Chater said Karen O’s performance made it sound as though it had always existed, while she praised the band and said she immediately wanted to collaborate. It follows June’s Jamie xx collaboration ‘Every Single Weekend’ and May’s ‘Together’, featuring Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza and Prentiss.
