The Best Sci-Fi Series of the ’90s Is Officially Getting a Disney+ Reboot
Disney+ is developing a new adaptation of the 1990s young-adult science-fiction series *Animorphs*, with Ryan Coogler attached as an executive producer. The reboot brings back a franchise known for combining an alien invasion story with unusually dark themes, including body horror, war and loss, for its intended younger readership.
Bayan Wolcott will write and serve as showrunner, following work on *American Crime Story*, *The Summer I Turned Pretty*, *Class of ’09* and *The Testaments*. K.A. Applegate’s original series ran from 1996 to 2001 and comprised 54 main novels plus spin-offs; it follows five teenagers granted the power to turn into animals to fight parasitic Yeerk invaders, but they become trapped permanently if they remain transformed for more than two hours.
