In 2015, Vin Diesel predicted that Furious 7 would win the Best Picture Oscar, a claim that proved wildly off the mark when the award instead went to the drama Spotlight at the 2016 ceremony. The Academy has never given its top honour to a blockbuster action sequel, and Furious 7 was no exception, though the prediction highlighted the gulf between commercial success and critical/awards recognition in Hollywood.

Diesel told Variety before the film's release that Universal would have "the biggest movie in history" and that it would "probably win best picture" unless the Oscars wanted to become irrelevant. He was right about its commercial impact: the film, dedicated to the late Paul Walker, grossed around $1.5 billion and became the fourth highest-grossing film in Hollywood history at the time. That same year, Mad Max: Fury Road did pick up six Oscars from ten nominations, but only in technical categories such as editing, production design and make-up. The franchise later produced The Fate of the Furious, F9 and Fast X, with a final instalment, Fast Forever, due in 2028.
