## Key points

- Bill Hader voices the Cat in an inventive animated adaptation.
- The film offers frequent jokes and striking visual ideas.
- Creative and enjoyable, though it overstays its welcome.

## Summary

The animated Cat in the Hat is a lively, creative adaptation that improves on the 2003 live-action film, but falls short of being great. Bill Hader voices the Cat, who visits siblings Gabby and Sebastian as they adjust to moving to a new city, bringing imaginative chaos and humour into their lives.

The filmmakers expand the short children’s book into a feature-length story, adding an imagination-themed workplace and a search for a device that can rewind recent events. The film contrasts the Cat’s bright, eccentric world with the children’s more muted surroundings, and sends the trio through moving boxes filled with enlarged, animated objects. Frequent jokes, inventive visuals and Matt Berry’s performance as the children’s talking pet fish are praised, though the story is said to overstay its welcome.
