## Key points

- Bill Hader voices a notably friendly Cat in the Hat.
- The film sends a family through portal-like boxes into other worlds.
- The review says blockbuster spectacle overwhelms Seuss’s playful spirit.

## Summary

The new animated *The Cat in the Hat*, voiced by Bill Hader, turns Dr Seuss’s mischievous character into a friendly mascot and sends him into a story packed with spectacle and familiar blockbuster ideas. The review argues that this approach loses the books’ anarchic charm, making the film feel more like a corporate mash-up than a fresh adaptation.

The story follows Gabby, a lonely teenager who has moved to a new city with her younger brother Sebastian and their mother. The Cat’s arrival leads to adventures through three boxes that act as portals to other worlds, with gadgets, a giant monster and characters including their British goldfish, Waffles. The reviewer sees echoes of *Inside Out*, *Minions* and other films, and considers Hader’s warm performance a missed chance to give the Cat more edge.
